They were storyboards, noiseless characters in the grumble of a neighborhood, storefronts, ledgers of past opulence, canvasses, signs of gentrification, Memorials for communities, Celebrations, Congregations, Death Beds Safe Havens, billboards of transgressions, Silent Protestors, Warning Calls, and extension of the expansive sky. A unique call and response to their surroundings, each one called to me, and I quickly began documenting.
The following collection is shot primarily on the South and West Sides of Chicago, once, quite literally, the center of Chicago and the Great Migration. Now, it battles systemic sabotage daily (redlining, underfunding, mass incarceration, school closures, over-policing, food apartheid, etc.) Yet, teaming with the same revolutionary ferocity in its art, showmanship, pride, and people. I didn't have to look beyond these walls to find a home. With that, being made to connect and reconnect with all that surrounded me.
